Youth Development Programme - Department of Conservation - Dunedin
Youth Development Programme, A Development Programme for Young People, Department of Conservation, Dunedin, four intakes per year.
A free ten-week training/development courses for 16-24 year olds with interests in conservation, the outdoors, working in the community, gaining practical experience and work skills, increasing self-awareness and personal development, trying new things, and having fun.
Because this programme is integrated into DOC's work programmes in Coastal Otago, there are great opportunities provided to be involved in a diverse range of conservation projects, to visit some special places, and to work beside skilled and experienced conservation rangers.
- Conservation Work. Can include wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, track building and maintenance, species conservation work, planting and nursery work, historic restoration, fencing, predator and weed work - working with DOC staff and with community conservation groups in a wide variety of environments.
- Education/Development. Outdoor first aid, marine mammal rescue, te ao Maori including marae stay, public speaking, personal development, leadership and problem solving, communication skills, radio and GPS skills, practical skills, chainsaw or ATV training, risk management and organisational skills, ecological and conservation skills, CV development, work experience.
- Challenging Recreation. Activities can include tramping, fitness training, rock climbing, abseiling, swimming, kayaking, fishing, surfing, mountain biking, navigation, bush survival, camping and outdoor skills training. Includes day-trips from Dunedin, and week-long activities at more distant locations.
