Heritage Specialist (Cultural) – Auckland Council

Auckland Council is one of the largest in the South Pacific and our business is to help achieve the Mayor's vision of making Auckland the most liveable city in the world. Auckland has a distinctive built, cultural and natural heritage that is integral to the region's identity. This Heritage Unit leads the development of integrated heritage policy to inform council-wide strategies, plans and policies and their implementation, to achieve the council's key heritage objectives.

This is a unique opportunity to join Auckland Council's Heritage Unit. You will be part of a team passionately committed to conserve Auckland's heritage working closely with colleagues specialising in all facets of cultural and built heritage within a wider multidisciplinary Environmental, Strategy and Policy Department.

We are currently seeking applications from graduates who preferably have at least two years postgraduate experience in a heritage related field coupled with a demonstrable interest in conserving a range of heritage places in the region.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelors degree in historic or cultural heritage (e.g. archaeology, historic heritage conservation, Maori Studies, resource management, landscape architecture or equivalent (essential)
  • Masters degree in a related field (desirable)
  • 2-plus years experience in relevant heritage/resource management field
  • A good understanding and knowledge of Resource Management Act, Historic Places Act and other legislation relative to local government administration
  • Proven experience in successful relationship management to achieve organisational outputs
  • Good analytical skills
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Full driver's licence.
